In anticipation of MHASI 2016, Bernadine Young Bird and her team at the Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College have been planting a traditional Hidatsa garden. They are following the methods of Buffalo Bird Woman, a historic Hidatsa woman renowned for her expertise in gardening and food preparation.
The team finished planting the first week of June and we are happy to share that everything is thriving! These include traditional garden three-sister plants of squash, beans, and corn, as well as sunflowers.
A special thanks to Darian Morsette of MHA Tourism for allowing the team to plant in their traditional garden spot at the Earth Lodge Village.
Stay tuned for progress reports and pictures of the garden project. Just like the seeds, the Hidatsa culture is still growing strong!
